Therapists hold everyone. But who holds them?

A space for you,
outside your circle

You may already have consultation groups and colleagues you confer with. But it’s important that therapists have dedicated space for themselves. And, with someone they trust. Someone who feels up to the task, who will get you, and who will hold your feet to the fire when it’s needed.

Too many therapists are good at being there for others but when they need some time and space, it can be tough to step back. And it can be tough finding the right person who feels up to it.

So often, burnout and fatigue aren’t a caseload problem. They’re a “you” problem. So many of us come to this work being the best at handling problems, carrying heavy loads, and focusing on others to make sure they're okay. In the process, we lose ourselves. It becomes a habit. It often develops in childhood, where that sort of skill was needed—but if you don't turn your attention to it and address it, it consumes your adult life too.

Therapy for therapists: A functional approach

Your therapy is the place where you clear space to look at that pattern and turn it around. I practice Functional Psychotherapy, a model I developed myself rather than borrowing someone else's—bottom-up, experiential work aimed at real change, rather than top-down work that manages symptoms and tries to control them through insight alone. It's one relationship, just the two of us—not a group, not a consultation cohort. My style is warm and kind, but also challenging and very direct when it needs to be. More on how I work →

Your therapy is for you—not a client, and not someone you'd refer here. One hour that's just about you, with someone who isn't down the hall, doesn't share your professional circles, and isn't on anyone else's radar.
